After six decades of creative work with many materials, I am still addicted to the Zen challenge in seeking a a subtle harmony of form, function, and materials. Therein is the peace, pride, redemption, and joy that keeps me going. My studio name, SHIBUI, is an aesthetic term described as “Beauty with inner implications” by Yanagi Sōetsu in The Unknown Craftsman. It reminds me of what to strive for in making artisan jewelry, or forged wire sculptures, or even in using words and images to convey significance to our daily activities.
