Joyce grew up in the small town of Madison, West Virginia, the daughter of a Baptist minister. After a teaching career in public schools, she worked in the state higher education system. Her spare time creative activities in those years included weaving and photography. Not until her retirement years did she explore various painting techniques with abstract subjects and her passion for color and texture.
