Newman Jackson | Aphrolachian Artist

Gallery Eleven features Charleston artist Newman Jackson in our new store in Elk City Historical District. A late bloomer in Charleston’s art world, Newman didn’t become a full-time artist until his retirement years. His studio name, Aphrolachian Art, indicates the point of view his social consciousness inhabits while he explores a wide range of artistic modes and techniques. A longtime fan of Norman Rockwell and Salvador Dali, Newman’s paintings show his evolution in personal realism, through surrealistic gestures, and into complex abstract coloration.

Bologna Sandwich and Root Beer Kool Aid in a Jelly Jar, oil on canvas, 48 x 36.
Back in the Day, Perplexed, oil & cold wax, 36 x 48. Note the flying pterodactyls she’s watching.
Gucci Cool, oil and grease with oil stick on canvas, 36 x 24.
While Newman is widely known for his joy in working with large canvases, some of his huge paintings are available in smaller versions in our unframed prints bins. A series of notecards with images of his paintings will also be available in the spring, along with more limited-edition notecards representing creative works by other area artists.
Don’t miss our Grand Opening at the new location, 205 West Washington St. on February 20. There will be Open House all day from 11 am - 7 pm with champagne, charcuterie board, and door prizes.
