Randy Selbe | Carving Clay

Ceramist Randy Selbe is Gallery Eleven's featured artist for May, 2025. A native West Virginian, Randy Selbe joined Gallery Eleven's co-operative membership in 2009, and now serves as its Vice President. Her featured exhibit is shared with painter Newman Jackson, who was featured artist in March, 2025. See post.

Prolific designer and producer of artisan ceramics, Randy also sells her works statewide via Tamarack's warehouse program, in addition to exhibiting in their competition gallery exhibitions. She has won awards in several regional art competitions, including Allied Artists of West Virginia Biannual juried exhibitions in 2024.

Her signature treatment of wheel-thrown pottery forms is in cutting out or carving patterns in bowls or jars before the clay is dried and fired. She usually demonstrates her cutting design process in leather hard clay when scheduled as artist of the day at Gallery Eleven. See artist calendar

Randy often adds hand-shaped or found objects to urn handles. She is also known for her use of colorful glazes. In addition to her distinctive vases and urns, the gallery regularly displays her works of art for sale in a range of functional mugs, rice bowls, pitchers, and flat slab wall hangings.

"Making and collecting art dominates my gene pool." says Randy, "Most of my relatives have been artists or art collectors. My challenge in creating pottery is to balance uniqueness and appeal with true functionality.
